Why “Ana de Austria”?

It is dedicated to Anne of Austria, an Augustinian and Cistercian nun, Abbess of Las Huelgas in Burgos.

Anne of Austria was the supposed “lover” of the pastry chef of Madrigal, a story that has inspired so much writing by novelists and playwrights.

Entering the height of this princess’s life, as her youth was awakening, Friar Miguel de los Santos, a very influential Portuguese Augustinian, arrived in Madrigal as chaplain. He had been exiled from his homeland for plotting a conspiracy against Philip II of Spain. Friar Miguel was trying by all means to have the Spanish monarch expelled from his country. This was the opportunity for the young Augustinian nun of Madrigal to enter the scene. She was in a period of spiritual formation and had little experience of life, having been raised in the monastery since the age of six. Since she was a bright young woman, and given her royal lineage, the cunning Augustinian judged her suitable for the new conspiracy he was planning in his mind.
