Why “Cardenal Quiroga”?
“It is dedicated to Gaspar de Quiroga y Vela, whose prestige led Philip II, in 1559, to appoint him as his envoy to inform him of the situation in the various kingdoms of the Spanish Empire in Italy. He was Bishop of Cuenca in 1571 and, in 1573, Inquisitor General, where he is remembered for having freed Fray Luis de León.
Quiroga died in Madrid on November 20, 1594.
